Silk Road Thai Bistro at The Fort

Last weekend, I have discovered Silk Road Thai Bistro, a restaurant which recently opened at Shop H, Net Quad Corporate Center, The Fort. I was invited to their intimate media event together with fellow bloggers.

Owned by Ms. Cecille Chang Ysmael, a member of the prestigious Thai Chef Association and also the creator of Thai at Silk, Simply, Thaipan and Thai Bistro, I must say that Silk Road brings the finest and authentic Thai cuisine here in Manila. The interiors are not elaborate yet classy and blends with sophistication. Lamps hanging on the corners gives soft lighting to the place. It was also peaceful and far from the crowd during that night, making it a very relaxing place to dine in. They also have a close curtain room where VIPs like celebrities and politician can dine while keeping their privacy.

They offer a wide selection of drinks. From non-alcoholic drinks like the popular Thai milk tea to wines and cocktail drinks. They always have a drink that would best complement a dish. Ask the staff for recommendation! That night, I opted for Thai Green Milk Tea. Their milk tea is freshly brewed and has the right amount of sugar and it was adorned with a purple orchid on the side.

Minutes later, our appetizers were served. The first that I could remember is Soi langsuan salad which is a mix of seared salmon flaked on green mango, apple, heart of palm in coco lime garlic sauce. It was too hot for me but it was sooo good, I can’t imagine this dish without chili. Good thing, spiciness can be adjusted to diners liking for a more enjoyable meal.

The next dish has a very interesting name which made me Google about it. Son-in-Law eggs are slightly deep fried eggs with a tale.

One story says, these are traditionally cooked by Thai mothers for their soon to be son-in-laws. It is a simple warning that if they do something promiscuous with their daughters, the man’s own body part has to be served the same way! Probably served with sweet sauce as well? Yikes.

We also tried their crispy Thai Spring Rolls. They arrived as if they are riding a wooden boat!

Then we also had Siam roti served with curry and salsa sauces. I like it better with curry sauce.

Of all the appetizers served, my personal favorite is Thai Ravioli. It’s sesame beef and shitake mushroom wrapped in a freshly steamed rice paper. Perfected maho (pork floss) on top and vinegar sauce.

Moving to the main course, we had Pad Thai. I think this is the most popular of all Thai dishes but Silk Road’s version is very impressive. The stir fried rice noodles, pork, shrimps, egg and bean sprouts were covered with cheese net and has crushed peanuts on the side.

Notice the colorful petals on top? I ate them. 😉

Next are fish dishes. The one on the left is Hormok, a steamed fish fillet in curry mousse while the other is called Kha, a fish fillet tossed in caramelized ginger ginger chili sauce. Among these two, I like Kha better!

We were already full but our sumptuous dinner isn’t over yet. The 8-hr cooked Lamb Shank Massaman arrived on the table with crispy noodles, shallots and sweet potato chips on its dark reddish brown curry sauce. The meat was sooo tender because of the delicate cooking and it goes pretty well with jasmine rice.

Another uniquely served dish was the Siamese Pork Ribs. The leaf box container has charcoal inside which acts as a grill, for presentation. The grilled cinnamon caramel pork ribs were tender however it is not one of the dishes to remember for me.

Of course, we cannot leave our seats without desserts! First was Silk Nest. A crispy slivers of taro and sweet potato with coconut ice cream paired with warm coconut syrup.  The ice cream was not thick but it was home made!

Next is Silk Road Dessert Sampler. If you want to try all their desserts but can’t finish everything, this is the best to order. It has Mango Sticky Rice, a basket of Coconut and Creamy Durian ice cream scoops, Takhoo Thai and a bowl of Coco Pearls (similar to sago).

Price range: Php 200 to Php 400
The food was great! I didn’t take down notes during the event but look, I still remember all the dishes and how they taste. Presentation-wise, it was fantastic! All plates were decorated with leaves and orchid which made it very traditional-looking. I like how they incorporate food with art for an affordable price. 85% of the ingredients used in their dishes are imported from Thailand. Imagine the authenticity of each dish. We could clearly taste the real Bangkok dishes in our seats!
Coming up in the next few months, Silk Thai will serve lunch buffets and have live DJs and bands playing outside till late night. Thank you so much Aldous Team and Ms. Cecille for the invitation!
