Birthday Wishes: Rekindled Love for Barbies

Rekindled love for Barbies. The world of Barbie is huge and very different from what I normally collect until someone (ehem, Eton, ehem) gifted me a Birthday Wishes Barbie twelve years ago.

This is my first Birthday Wishes Barbie from 2012. It’s been a while since I last unboxed her. I am glad for being an out-of-the-box collector because I was able to check on her legs under that pretty long gown. Molds were starting to grow and I was just right on time. I immediately cleaned her up and thought of having a Birthday vignette on a random weekend of July.

My Barbie fever did not really flourished in 2012. It was a slow transition. In 2018, I also acquired a few dolls from my niece who was about to gave them up when she entered teenage life. That is sooo sweet of her, btw (her Barbies didn’t have to sing “When She Loved Me” by Jessie on Toy Story 2). And then, Barbie The Movie happened. That boosted the online selling business where I acquired more second-hand Barbie dolls. This 1990 Birthday Barbie is one of my favorite dibs!

She’s “holding” a modern heart-shaped balloon and I find it really cute! That’s why I enjoy Barbie’s playability. I love “swappin’ styles” and buy random pieces that go well with my current collection. In fact, I dressed up some random bodies in Birthday Barbie gowns. The one on the left on the photo below is wearing a 1994 Birthday Barbie gown while the one on the right is flaunting her 1996 Birthday Barbie gown. And random balloons, of course.

Mixing old and new. I really hunted for an Odile mermaid and just like other collectors, I dreamed off putting her to a Made To Move body. I had several attempts, buying cheap, second-hand, MTM bodies, but it was a fail! The skintones didn’t match! Of course, I didn‘t listen to other collectors but if you wish to rebody, the perfect match to a purple Odile is Tennis MTM and for the orange Odile, you can use L.A tan MM, MTM Neysa, Lina Looks, Basketball, or BMR Mbili. I am a poor collector and I don’t have budget to behead those expensive brand new dolls just to have an Odile in human form.

And then, Eton had a brilliant idea! Instead of buying an exact MTM body, he suggested to put on gowns on them so the tails won’t show. No articulation but it definitely matches my collection! I put the purple Odile in a 1995 Birthday Barbie gown and I thought the shiny shimmery fabric matches her original hair and makeup!

While this should be a Birthday theme, I thought the orange Odile would look perfect in a vintage wedding dress from the 60s. What do you think?

1991 Birthday Barbie is actually wearing a peach gown. Not a hue that I would normally pick, but I got a good deal from a doll collector friend (and she got some pearls!) so here she is! I am sooo happy with this project and I hope you enjoyed reading this too. I have several themes lined up like the Sun Lovin’ Malibu girls, the ballerinas and modern ones and I can’t wait to put them altogether soon!
