I am now really excited for the Chinese New Year! Mom and dad are half Chinese (Lim and Chua) but we don’t have a custom to celebrate it, except for cooking Tikoy (nian gao/sticky rice) and buying oranges as a sign of prosperity. This year, we will celebrate it with a blast since it’s me and my mom’s year – Year of the Water Dragon!
Yesterday, me and
Eton started the celebration through art and film and went to the press screening of
Bodyguards and Assassins organized by Shangri-La Plaza and Ateneo de Manila University (Ricardo Leong Center for Chinese Studies, Celadon, and Confucius Institute). It is one of the six (6) films to be shown on the 6th Spring Film Festival which aims to help and encourage the Filipino youth to understand and appreciate Chinese culture. Bodyguards and Assassins is a multi-award winning, action-historical movie that tells one of China’s great tales from a new perspective. It’s about how Sun Yat-Sen was set to unify leaders to bring down the corrupt Qing Dynasty. As a result, the ruler of the dynasty, Dowager Cixi, wanted him killed. The Chinese people, including businessman Li Yutang, knew that protecting their leader meant safeguarding China’s last hope for liberation. He gathers commoners, like a tofu vendor, rickshaw pullers, a beggar, and an orphan, all which surprisingly has great Kung Fu skills! – to serve as bodyguards to Sun Yat-Sen and China’s consequent freedom. The movie was full of action with a little mix of drama and comedy that entertained me. I am not a fan of action movies but the excellent fight scenes on this movie are all brutally awesome! No worries for us who cannot understand Chinese, since it provided a quality script. No wonder why it garnered numerous awards from the 4th Asian Film Awards, 29th Hong Kong Film Awards, 16th Hongkong Film Critics Society Awards and 47th Golden Horse Awards.
We arrived early at Shang Cineplex. The mall is still closed but the guard from the mall entrance let us pass inside. So while waiting for the movie to start, I took a photo of my animal print dress. Since, I’m an Alzheimer’s fashion blogger, I forgot to take outfit shots. Haha!
Unlike the previous years when a minimal admission fee was charged, this year’s festival will offer FREE ADMISSION for everyone! First come, first served basis. Schools are also welcome to bring their students for block screenings.
